In the 2002 book Primal Leadership, Goleman, Boyatzis and McKee state, “playfulness holds a prominent place in the tool kit of emotionally intelligent leaders,” and “the artful use of humor typifies effective leadership.” I have found this to be absolutely true as I have not only been a long-term leader, but have been part of teams who have been led by leaders who use playfulness and humor in ways that cause their teams to be effective and joyful. One leader I know says one of his primary team objectives is to have fun at all times. They take their mission extremely seriously, but everything they do is done in a way to have a great time doing it. This leader is fantastic, and has led his organization to great heights while all the time making sure that the entire team is having fun along the way.
Playfulness is one of my personal leadership techniques. It comes naturally to me, but I’m also intentional about it. If you ask those who work with me, they will tell you that I often make people laugh as I playfully go through the day. My team gatherings are high energy, fun, and filled with humor. Even though I am an intense person and take my work, like the leader I described above, very seriously, I bounce off the walls and take a playful spirit everywhere I go.
As leaders, I want to encourage you to do as I do. Work hard, make your mission count, and continually challenge your team members to reach new heights. However, as you do, make your efforts fun and try not to take yourself too seriously. The mission is serious enough on its own, so the leader doesn’t have to be so driven and intense that nobody has any fun. I promise that your team will remain committed to you and the organization if they have a great time while carrying out their tasks. Play, laugh, and do the unexpected with your team. You’ll see great benefits.
Lead well.
