I’m a big fan of Bob Goff. If you haven’t read his book, Love Does, you must. I’ve had the privilege of hearing him in person on several occasions and he is one of the best examples I know of a humble, yet highly effective leader.
This statement from Bob simply serves as a reminder that when organizations look for their leaders, they mustn’t feel required to look for a rock star, but rather a humble servant. He stated,
I reflect on God, who didn’t choose someone else to express His creative presence to the world, who didn’t tap the rock star or the popular kid to get things done. He chose you and me. We are the means, the method, the object, and the delivery vehicles. God can use anyone, for sure. If you can shred on a Fender or won ‘Best Personality,’ you’re not disqualified—it just doesn’t make you more qualified. You see, God usually chooses ordinary people like us to get things done.
That’s great news for all of us. Regardless of our talents, experience, age, or other defining factors, we can lead. The trick, though, is to lead with humble intelligence. You might be a rock star, but don’t go around acting like it. Remember that you won’t always be able to fit into those tight pants and you very well might lose your hair!
Be humble. Lead well.
